Meet our nursery manager, Amanda Brown

I have been working in childcare for over 10 years. My background is in restaurant management, and I started as a kitchen assistant at the nursery when my son started school. I then completed my Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in early years, progressed to Deputy Manager, before taking on the Manager role in 2015.

As my husband is serving in the RAF, I have been part of the RAF community for over 35 years. This has given me an understanding of needs and a passion to help service families.

My number one priority is running a nurturing and exciting environment in the nursery, ensuring all the children, parents and staff feel supported.

Frequently asked questions

We have provided answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below.

What are the reasons for this change?

The RAF reviewed the provision of nursery service at RAF High Wycombe and initiated a public tender process for the three settings. RAFAKidz took part in this competitive process and are delighted that we have been selected by the RAF to become the new nursery provider for RAF High Wycombe.

The RAF’s Air Commercial department is responsible for the tender process. If you have questions relating to the tender process or the outcome, please direct these to Air Commercial.
Under the terms of the tender process, we were not permitted to contact the station, parents or staff at any of the settings until Wednesday 15 February when the contract was signed. Questions regarding communications of the tender process itself should be directed to the RAF’s Air Commercial department.

About RAFAKidz

RAFAKidz currently operates five nurseries at RAF Odiham, Cranwell, Leeming, Brize Norton and Digby. Within each of our settings we provide experiences that are special, unique and child-focused. All our nurseries are fully OFSTED registered, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to safeguarding and quality assurance. As a not-for-profit trading subsidiary of the RAF Association, RAFAKidz can focus on providing a high-quality service to RAF families, rather than on making commercial profit.

In 2019 RAF Community Support at HQ AIR identified that the availability of childcare is a key concern for serving RAF families and that access to quality, affordable childcare is critical. RAFAKidz was established in 2019 as a direct response to that need.

How will this impact the nursery settings?

We are doing all we can to ensure continuity of care, as far as it is possible to do so. There are some enhancements that we will be introducing, such as the implementation of our nursery management system, Famly. We use Famly to send invoices, communicate with parents and carers and provide updates on our children’s learning and development. We are also seeking to improve recognition of employees across the settings, including reflecting this within their rates of pay which as part of the RAFAKidz terms and conditions will be £12 per hour.

RAFAKidz is able to provide childcare at a very competitive cost to parents / carers due to it being a not-for-profit trading subsidiary of the RAF Association rather than a commercial, profit-making organisation. We are still awaiting on some key pieces of information from the existing nursery providers in order to confirm our fees. We will share this information with parents and carers as soon as possible.

The nurseries will be closed for four days from 3 – 6 April. This closure is essential as we must complete a range of preparation tasks in order for Ofsted to register the settings under the new RAFAKidz management. These tasks include carrying out checks of the buildings and ensuring that our risk assessments and evacuation plans are appropriate, installing new furniture and equipment (where needed) and ensuring that all of our staff have completed our mandatory safeguarding and health and safety training.
We provide childcare for at least 50 weeks of the year. We align our closures with Station shut-down periods but are typically closed for one week at Christmas and on bank holidays.
Our intention is to maintain the current opening hours of each of the nurseries.
We hope to continue to provide what is currently offered at the nursery settings. We provide home cooked food at all but one of our other RAFAKidz nurseries, where we use quality meals provided by a recognised nursery food supplier.

How will this impact employees?

We recognise the integral role of nursery staff and the importance of continuity in a child’s life, therefore, we have been careful to ensure that all employees of the former nursery provider have been given the opportunity to work for RAFAKidz. We are treating this as a relevant transfer under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006.

We welcome the opportunity to have a completely confidential conversation with existing nursery employees or potential future employees. We encourage anyone who would like further information to contact us via [email protected] and we will arrange to have a confidential chat at a time convenient for you.
Members of the RAFAKidz management team are doing all we can to work with the nursery employees and ensure they are given accurate information and advice and to consult them regarding the transition. We hope that the existing nursery employees will choose to transfer over to us and we look forward to welcoming them to the RAFAKidz family. RAFAKidz will provide all nursery employees with comprehensive training and personal development to assist them in delivering the highest quality childcare. We want to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for the current employees.
